International Disaster Risk Reduction Day (DRR) on Oct. 13 celebrates ongoing DRR programs and brings awareness to the importance of climate adaptation and other DRR activities for vulnerable populations in developing countries. This year’s theme, “Making Children and Young People Partners for Disaster Risk Reduction,” focuses on encouraging children and young people to participate in disaster reduction and decision making; promoting stronger partnerships between governments, companies, communities, and children and youth; and recognizing the important links between children and national and community development, including achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The United Nations also launched a Children’s Charter for Disaster Risk Reduction, outlining five priorities of DRR activities focused on children and youth.
In celebration of International Disaster Risk Reduction Day, InterAction’s DRR Working Group will host an event, “Breaking the Cycle: Building Upon Successes and Learning from Failures in the Horn of Africa,” which will focus on DRR programs in the region, ongoing challenges, and what is being done to break the cycle of hunger, poverty, and famine in the region.
InterAction has also created an interactive map, highlighting the disasters worldwide from 2010-2011.
