Educating Girls in Dadaab

Girls in Kenya’s Dadaab refugee complex who want an education encounter many cultural barriers. For example, boys are urged to go to school while girls are expected to handle household tasks like cooking and cleaning.

According to statistics from the UN Refugee Agency, only 38 percent of children under 18 in Dadaab attend school, and of the students, about a third are girls.  InterAction members Save the Children and CARE have instituted programs for girls to help them reverse this trend.
