Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts continue
A week after Hurricane Sandy made landfall, recovery efforts continued on the U.S. Eastern seaboard as commuters navigated lengthy commutes, tens of thousands of people remained in need of shelter, and the region braced for another storm.
More than 1.3 million customers remained without power in the affected states on Monday, down from a combined peak of more than 8.5 million, according to a U.S. Department of Energy report. In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said on Sunday that 30,000 to 40,000 people needed shelter, including 20,000 in public housing, according to Reuters.
Meanwhile, freezing temperatures, rain and high winds are in the forecast, as meteorologists warn of a strong "nor'easter" bearing down on the coast.
Storm-related deaths in North America now total at least 113, Reuters reported, and 69 people in the Caribbean were killed before the storm reached the U.S. Economic losses from the hurricane are estimated to be in the tens of billions of dollars.
