Sam Worthington, InterAction President and CEO, will join USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah and others to testify Thursday, July 29 before the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere about the crisis in Haiti.

International nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have been a strong partner in Haiti recovery efforts. Members of the InterAction alliance have been working closely with the Haitian government, local civil society organizations and residents to move the recovery forward. All share a strong determination to coordinate their work, respect Haitian government regulations and are working closely with Haitian partners. As of July 12, InterAction member organizations had raised approximately $900 million for Haiti relief, recovery and reconstruction. Of this amount, $400 million is designated for relief and recovery efforts; $500 million for reconstruction.

InterAction believes that NGOs should be transparent and accountable in how they do their work. To support that belief, it established its first-ever NGO Coordination Office in Port-au-Prince within 10 days of the earthquake, with the support of USAID. This office works with INGOs to coordinate work being carried on around the country and maintains an active database of program information. In addition, InterAction has spearheaded an effort to develop a Haiti mapping platform with corporate partners that will offer detailed information on our members’ programs in the country. The map will have the capacity to link with other maps and thousands of databases such as those belonging to the UN, World Bank and others. The map’s purpose is to improve NGO coordination, facilitate partnerships between NGOs and the private sector, and help NGOs and other actors in Haiti make more informed decisions about where to direct their resources. The initial mapping prototype can be viewed here: http://haitiaidmap.org.
