InterAction has created a hashtag on Twitter—#USMDG2010—to spread word about what concerned parties have been doing ahead of the Millennium Development Goals Summit 2010, which will take place in September. It is a good way to reach an ever broader audience—anyone that has a Twitter account can follow and tweet using the hashtag. Through #USMDG2010, we have been posting MDG-related activities of InterAction and our member organizations, the latest news on government actions, and related articles from the web. Most importantly, by asking provoking questions, we have elicited responses from the general public on their thoughts and aspirations on the Summit.
Since their creation, the MDGs have been one of InterAction’s focus areas. We consider the MDG Summit to be a monumental step in working towards achieving the goals by 2015. Since there are only five years left for the 189 countries to settle these unsolved problems, it is urgent for the U.S. government to lead this process and develop an efficient and feasible strategy for the Summit. InterAction has met with officials from various government departments and UN agencies in a concerted effort to articulate the NGO community’s ideas, interests, and concerns regarding the MDGs, the U.S. plan, and President Obama’s speech at the UN Review Summit.
In the coming weeks, InterAction will release a response to the U.S. plan, using our Public Policy paper on the MDGs as a basis for comparison. Our members will continue their attempts to reach out the administration, as well. All of these efforts will be tweeted through #USMDG2010, and posted on our MDGs webpage. Additionally, by searching #USMDG2010, you can quickly track the relevant news and share your own opinions on MDGs and the forthcoming Summit.
