The Modernizing Foreign Assistance Network (MFAN) – to which InterAction belongs – launched its new campaign last week, Reform Within Reach, to urge President Barack Obama to push for critical reforms in U.S. foreign assistance.

In a letter to Mr. Obama, MFAN urges the president to take leadership in two vital areas: Create America’s first Global Development Strategy which will effectively provide the U.S. with a clear strategy to reduce global poverty, and partner with Congress and rewrite of the Foreign Assistance Act (FAA), last revised in 1961. MFAN believes rewriting this legislation and developing the first U.S. global development strategy are crucial to making U.S. foreign assistance more effective, and better reaching those most in need.

MFAN still needs the support of NGOs and others to get the message across to the White House. On MFAN’s public website, there is an open sign-on letter to Barack Obama already signed by sixty organizations. In a continued effort to influence key leaders, there is an opportunity for interested organizations to add their name to the letter as well. Now is a critical time, as undoubtedly the administration is now focusing on development as it prepares for the September UN Millennium Development Goals Summit.
