U.S.-based international NGOs are making a positive impact in Haiti as it recovers from its worst earthquake in more than 200 years. In an effort to illustrate that impact, InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based international development and humanitarian nongovernmental organizations, has launched the Haiti Earthquake Relief Barometer.
This barometer, which currently registers just over $350 million in donations from the American public, will track private donations to the more than 80 InterAction member organizations working in Haiti. As with InterAction’s first barometer in 2005, the Tsunami Relief Barometer , this barometer is a graphic representation of support for U.S. NGOs helping Haiti’s earthquake victims. It reflects aggregate totals, not donations to individual groups, and will be updated weekly. The total given is also an estimate, as numbers are changing daily and sometimes hourly.
In addition to the barometer, InterAction has developed an NGO Impact in Haiti Factsheet to offer some specific details about the scope of member organizations’ work in Haiti, organized a twitter feed to stay up-to-date on recovery efforts and pulled together an assortment of related documents.
