InterAction marks “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence”
As part of their participation in this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence campaign, members of InterAction’s working group on gender-based violence in humanitarian settings have developed a new resource list to support that work being done by members and partners.
Started in 1991 by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership at Rutgers University, this global campaign, which purposely falls between Nov. 25 (International Day Against Violence Against Women) and Dec. 10 (International Human Rights Day), condemns violence against women as a human rights violation.
According to the center’s website, the campaign has been used as a strategy by those calling for the elimination of all forms of violence against women to:
- Raise awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international levels.
- Strengthen local work addressing violence against women.
- Establish a clear link between local and international work to end violence against women.
- Provide a forum in which organizers can develop and share new and effective strategies.
- Demonstrate the solidarity of women around the world organizing against violence against women.
- Create tools to pressure governments to implement promises made to eliminate violence against women.
