MEMBER NEWS: Global Health Council announces winner of 2011 Gates Award for Global Health

TDR, a program for research and training in tropical diseases, was announced as Global Health Council’s 2011 winner of the Gates Award for Global Health. The research is based at the World Health Organization (WHO) and co-sponsored by UNICEF, UNDP, the World Bank and WHO.

TDR focuses on eliminating poverty-driven and tropical diseases, and places a strong emphasis on collaboration with scientists, NGOs and leaders in the countries where the diseases and problems occur. The organization is recognized for nearly eliminating leprosy and reducing the burden of river blindness (onchocerciasis). They continue to make headway in eliminating other neglected diseases including dengue, tuberculosis and malaria.

The Gates Award for Global Health will be presented to TDR on June 16 at Global Health Council’s Annual International Conference on Global Health in Washington, D.C. It is the worlds’ largest public health award.
