NGOs face new restrictions in Zimbabwe

Political parties in Zimbabwe's coalition government appear to have taken opposing stands on the status of nongovernmental organizations working in the country, putting further pressure on aid groups who provide food, clean water and other services to a struggling population.

Masvingo Province Resident Minister Titus Maluleke has issued a restrictive registration requirement for NGOs working in his province, and President Robert Mugabe’s party has claimed that NGOs are politically intrusive. In contrast, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s political party and the National Association of NGOs (NANGO) have raised concerns that the requirement will negatively affect the work of aid groups at a time when the country is suffering a severe drought and increased hunger.
