Save the Children Report on State of the World’s Mothers

InterAction member Save the Children released their 13th annual State of the World’s Mothers Report, listing the best and worst places to be a mother in the world. The report examines the well-being of mothers and children in 165 countries, analyzing factors such as the mother’s health, education and economic status, along with child mortality rates.

Niger ranked as the worst place, which displaced Afghanistan from last place for the first time in two years. Niger is currently facing a hunger crisis, with the lives of a million children at risk. Norway is ranked the best place for mothers, based on such factors as quality access to health care and contraception.

According to the report, malnutrition claims the lives of more than 2.6 million children each year, and an additional 171 million suffer from chronic malnutrition, which stunts their growth. The report also showed that measures encouraging mothers to breastfeed could save 1 million children’s lives each year.
