Senegal Presidential Election Sets Example for Peaceful Political Process in Africa

President Abdoulaye Wade conceded defeat to his former protégé, Maky Sall, on Monday in Senegal’s presidential election. World leaders view the democratic success in Senegal as a sign of hope after last week’s military coup in Mali.

Wade’s popularity dropped after he won a court ruling to run for a third term, overriding the country’s constitution, which limits presidents to serving no more than two terms. Voter frustration with the economy, unemployment and the regional drought were also significant factors in Sall’s victory.
