UN, Haiti Call for Increased Funding for Humanitarian Aid
The UN and the Haitian government announced on Tuesday that more humanitarian funding is critical this spring for those affected by the 2010 earthquake. They are asking for about $60 million to improve water and sanitation conditions, help people still living in camps, address the continuing cholera outbreak and prepare for the upcoming hurricane season.
“When there is a disaster, the public responds with tremendous generosity, and those private dollars flow into organizations that are trying to make a difference on the ground,” said InterAction president and CEO Sam Worthington to the Miami Herald. “When the public turns its attention elsewhere, what is critical is to come through on the pledges that were made in March right after the earthquake happened.”
