UN says one million need humanitarian aid in Syria

At least one million people are in need of humanitarian help in Syria, according to UN Under-Secretary General and Emergency Relief Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs, Valerie Amos.

“It is extremely important that negotiations to enable humanitarian organizations in Syria to deliver aid remain separate from other efforts to resolve the crisis. It is also vital that we are able to make emergency humanitarian supplies and services available to people in a way that protects civilians and aid workers,” said Amos in a statement released in New York.

Earlier on Friday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy called for the creation of humanitarian corridors, a move he said could help relief groups get food and medical aid to people caught in the crossfire. For more information on Sarkozy’s appeal, read the article on Reuters.com.
