Join the #SyriaCrisis Tweetathon, March 15th from 9 am to 9 pm!

The crisis in Syria passes the two-year mark in March with no end to the conflict in sight. Meanwhile the number of people in need grows as over 1 million refugees have fled to neighboring countries while about 2 million people are displaced within Syria. And as fighting persists, the death toll continues to rise, topping 70,000 killed in early March.

On Friday, March 15, social media activists are taking over Twitter to tell their friends about the crisis in Syria, raising awareness for refugees and urging people to take action.

Members of InterAction – the largest alliance of U.S.-based international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) – will be leading the charge with #SyriaCrisis tweets from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday.

Together, the humanitarian organizations responding to the emergency in Syria want to encourage as many people as possible to join in our tweetathon so that we may remind the world that we have not forgotten –  and will not ignore –  the growing crisis in Syria.

What’s a tweetathon?

A tweetathon is one way anyone can support the organizations working to save lives in and around Syria. Just like in a good old-fashioned telethon, we’re going to talk #SyriaCrisis all the way from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. ET this Friday.

All you have to do to participate is visit http://twitter.com/search/%23syriacrisis and tweet a message of support for the innocent people of Syria using the #SyriaCrisis hashtag.

To prepare, just make sure you’re following @UNRefugeeAgency (that’s us). Then, whenever you can on March 15th, sign into Twitter and follow the #SyriaCrisis hashtag to participate in the conversation. You don’t have to tweet the whole time — just whenever you have a few minutes to chat!

As much as possible during that time, encourage your Twitter followers to join in and tweet the#SyriaCrisis to remind the world that the innocent people affected by the crisis in Syria will not be forgotten. What better way to spread peace?

We’ve made it easy for you — copy and paste any of the below that speak to you and your followers. We’ve pre-populated the tweets with links for extra simplicity… and they’re already under 140 characters each!

We also encourage you to get creative with your tweets, too!

So please join us! It’s easy, it’s fun, and it could help someone you’ll probably never meet … but you’ll be infinitely better off for doing so.
