Collaborative Development Initiatives

While individual nongovernmental organizations have many examples of effective relief and development programs in the field, there is less public information about the work they do on a large scale collaborative basis. There are two mechanisms for this type of collaborative assistance: Umbrella Grants, in which one agency acts as the manager and lead on a portfolio of activities carried out by several groups; and Cooperative Agreements, where awards are made to multiple agencies to deliver a coordinated set of activities throughout a country or region. Below are just a few of the successful initiatives launched by groups of NGOs, undertaking projects that few of them could do alone and achieve these types of high-impact results.

NGO Umbrella Grants

C-SAFE-Meeting Emergency Food Needs in Southern Africa

Croatia: Economic and Community Revitalization (2001-2004)

Azerbaijan Humanitarian Assistance Program (1998-2004)

Cooperative Agreements Using Coordinated NGO Efforts

Serbia: Community Revitalization through Democratic Action (2001-2006)

Central Asia: Community Action Investment Project (2002-2005)
