Security Coordinator, Humanitarian Policy and Practice Team
About the Position:

Basic Functions
The Coordinator supports InterAction’s Security Director in carrying out the core functions of the Security Unit: collecting and sharing security information; advocating for staff safety; designing and implementing security training; and promoting a common security framework and standards of good practices.
Responsibilities:
- Facilitate the sharing of information regarding security incidents among InterAction members;
- Support IA membership in implementing Minimum Operating Security Standards (MOSS);
- Promote security of national and international staff members;
- Facilitate the identification of security training courses;
- Identify best practices that address the range of security issues that humanitarian aid workers face in the field (gender, race, creed, religion, sexual orientation ethnicity, etc);
- Liaise with other security coordinators and institutions;
- Help implement the UN-NGO ‘Saving Lives Together’ arrangement;
- Promote and gather feedback on humanitarian space and accessibility;
- Support the Security Advisory Group (SAG), and InterAction on security initiatives; help develop an internet site for NGO Security that provides country briefs, a collective of training opportunities and online links, assessment tools and common incident reporting and sharing;
- Support the Security Director as needed.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of three years experience (preferably 1-2 years in the field in international relief work). Overseas experience in staff safety and operational security would be a good asset.
- Proven networking, coordination, and interpersonal skills are essential, as this is the core of InterAction’s and the Security Unit’s method of operation.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent leadership, negotiation, and administration skills.
- Knowledge of international politics and cultures.
- Ability to create an environment of innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Availability for possible domestic and international travel on short notice.
- Ability to operate software systems such as Microsoft Office Suite and proprietary databases.
Note: Professional experience in the military or police is not a substitute for the above requirements. The position requires solid program management skills. Experience in security as stated above is preferred but not essential.

Purpose:
The Director of Humanitarian Practice provides leadership and supervision to InterAction staff working on issues related to humanitarian emergencies as well as overall leadership to InterAction member agencies engaged in humanitarian assistance. The Director engages with global structures and working groups involved in the coordination of humanitarian responses. The Director represents InterAction at a senior level on humanitarian emergency responses with the U.S. government and the United Nations.
Responsibilities:
- Supporting Humanitarian Emergency Responses:
- Provide overall leadership to InterAction staff working on humanitarian responses, as well as overall leadership to InterAction member agencies engaged in humanitarian assistance.
- Facilitate the activities of InterAction working groups relevant to humanitarian response, including both country-specific groups and ones devoted to thematic issues.
- Represent InterAction at a senior level on humanitarian emergency response issues with the U.S. government, especially OFDA, PRM and the Department of Defense; and the United Nations, especially OCHA, UNHCR, UNICEF, and the World Food Program. Engage with global mechanisms and working groups involved in humanitarian assistance policy and programming, including the Inter-Agency Standing Committee Working Group, Emergency Directors Working Group, the IASC Civil Military Informal Forum, the Civil Military Working Group facilitated by the U.S. Institute for Peace, Sphere Project Board, etc.
- Conduct periodic field visits to areas where member NGOs are responding in order to assess in-country coordination capacity and provide recommendations for support and improvement where needed.
- Improving Humanitarian Practice:
- Work closely with InterAction members and the HPPC Advisory Committee to identify gaps in member response and organize technical workshops with senior experts to address these gaps.
- Develop and share policy analysis, lessons learned, and best practices on humanitarian response with member agencies and the wider humanitarian community, including UN and U.S. government agencies, think tanks, and academic institutions.
- Act as primary civil military focal point for InterAction, working closely with USIP and members to advance the work of the USIP-facilitated Civil Military Working Group, as well as playing a leadership role in the Inter-Agency Standing Committee Civil Military Forum. Provide subject matter expertise to military training and education institutions
- Outreach:
- Coordinate with InterAction’s Communications Team to publicize member response to crises and to highlight issues of importance to InterAction members and the larger humanitarian community.
- Work closely with InterAction’s Public Policy Team, especially the Policy Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs, to ensure that accurate information on member activity is available to Congress.
- Team Leadership:
- Supervise the staff of the humanitarian emergency response sub-unit within the Humanitarian Policy and Practice Team at InterAction.
- Assist in the development of proposals for funding from government and private foundations to support the humanitarian emergency work of InterAction. Contribute to reports to donors that support InterAction’s humanitarian response activities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Vice President for Humanitarian Policy and Practice.
Qualifications:
- Masters degree in a relevant field or equivalent work experience.
- At least 10 years professional work experience on international humanitarian relief programs, a substantial portion of which should be field-based work with NGOs.
- Extensive knowledge of institutions and individuals involved in implementing, coordinating, and funding humanitarian response activities with international NGOs, the U.S. government, and the United Nations.
- Experience working on issues related to civil-military relations in humanitarian response at field and/or policy level.
- Proven ability to analyze and reflect on issues in emergency response, as evidenced by publications and involvement in policy initiatives.
- Strong written and verbal communications skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience managing the needs and interests of diverse constituencies.
- Availability for domestic and international travel.

Description:
InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based international NGOs, is looking for a dynamic, energetic Web Editor who can make our newly designed website www.interaction.org sparkle when it is launched early in 2012. The Web Editor will be a core member of the communications unit, working closely with our web developer and other teams across InterAction. A self-starter, the new editor will help streamline content on the home and interior pages of the site in a lively, timely, accurate manner and in easily navigable form. As a membership organization, InterAction wants to showcase not only our own impact but also that of our nearly 200 member NGOs who focus on the world’s most vulnerable and marginalized populations.
Responsibilities:
- Writes, edits, proofreads and copyedits content for the website
- Plans and implements multimedia packages for site
- Ensure that the site reflects current activities of InterAction and our members
- Advise and assist staff on how best to use the website to communicate effectively
- Collaborates with in-house web developer
- Update website with latest news related to industry, also distribute via social media
- Help develop content flow and editorial plan for website
- Ensure InterAction brand is accurately presented
- Take photographs and record videos of events to be loaded onto site via YouTube, Vimeo and Flickr channels
- Build out special pages, including for annual InterAction Forum conference and other events
- Knowledge of digital trends, including social media
- Assist and coordinate with InterAction’s magazine website content and editing as needed

Qualifications:

InterAction, the largest alliance of U.S.-based international NGOs, is looking for a talented Communications Associate to help implement our media and public relations strategy. InterAction helps shape important policy decisions on relief and long-term development issues and our nearly 200 members work in most developing countries, with a focus on the world’s most poor and vulnerable populations. The Communications Associate will help clearly articulate not only InterAction’s life-saving work but that of our members. The associate will be an integral part of the communications team, from helping with logistics to researching and crafting press releases and planning member and media events. Another core role is building strong relations with communications staff from our membership.

Coordinator, Resource Development Executive Office

BASIC FUNCTIONS: The Coordinator of Resource Development oversees fundraising, grants management, and grants monitoring and evaluation for InterAction. S/he convenes and works with staff across the organization as needed. S/he reports directly to the President and CEO and works closely with the Executive Office and the senior leadership in drafting proposals and responding to donor reporting requirements.
Responsibilities:
I. Foundation Fundraising —
Research private foundations to identify potential sources of funding for InterAction's core budget and projects that advance operational plan objectives.
Assist the President and Executive Team in preparing an annual fundraising strategy and action plan with both short- and long-term goals that are consistent with institutional goals and objectives.
Work with teams, consultants, and the Vice Presidents or Project Directors to draft, or as needed assist in the drafting, of grant proposals for U.S. foundations and other donors (e.g., US government agencies).
Manage final proposal production and submission.
II. Grants Management —
- Develop and maintain grant files and a grants database of all grants with assistance from interns, as needed. Prepare a brief description of grants (goals, objectives, and major activities) for all IA and relevant member staff.
- Track, and send reminders on, all donor-related deadlines.
- Work with the Project Manager for each grant to ensure that all reports for donors are drafted and submitted on time. Prepare templates that will enable staff to contribute to reports easily and in accordance with the funders' requirements. Coordinate with the Finance Team on preparation of all grant financial reports.
- Manage final narrative and financial report production and submission.
III. Grants Monitoring and Evaluation
- Manage and improve where possible the process for monitoring, gathering evaluation data and producing evaluative reports for InterAction grants.
- During proposal development, work with staff teams to develop logic models and evaluation tables for all proposals.
- During project implementation, work with grant teams to monitor and evaluate projects in accordance with the grant agreement.
- Draft the monitoring and evaluation sections of grant reports.
Qualifications:
A masters degree, or the equivalent, in a field of study directly related to international development. At least two- year experience with development-related research, project development, project implementation, project monitoring, and/or fundraising required. Experience working with international development and/or humanitarian response organizations is highly desirable. Excellent written and oral communications skills are essential. Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team, multi-task, set priorities, adapt to change, and solve problems. A self-starter and team player with an energetic, entrepreneurial attitude toward fundraising. Highly adept in using Microsoft Office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
