Program Associate / Senior Program Associate, Membership & Standards

Position Type: Full-time, Long Term
Location: Washington, DC
Travel: 0 % - 15 % (Domestic)
Reporting to: Vice President, Membership & Standards

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Member Services:

• Develop and maintain a database and organized, easily accessible filing system of individual member and non-member stakeholders and update monthly contact list for distribution to staff.
• Draft, edit and distribute correspondence.
• Assist team in outreach and information dissemination and serve as a contact between InterAction and member organizations regarding membership issues.
• Provide administrative support as requested by the Vice President of Membership & Standards.
• Support communications with and between members.
• Manage dues calculation and collection. Work closely with Finance & Administration on membership dues invoicing and tracking.
Event Planning:

• Assist in venue selection, contracting and budget of Annual Forum, CEO Retreat and Regional Meetings.
• Drive planning process and execution of workshop sessions and general program.
• Coordinate logistics (meeting space, Food & Beverage and Audio/Visual) and track registrations.
• Work closely with Vice President of Membership & Standards to develop and maintain an effective reporting system for events and functions, including budget planning, demographics, forecasting and analysis.
• Assist in developing the content of event materials.
External Relations:

• Provide information to the public about InterAction and its members.
• In cooperation with the Membership & Standards Team, conduct presentations on InterAction and its services.
• Develop and maintain relationships with vendors (hotels, airlines, etc.) on behalf of InterAction and its members.
Other:

• Assist in development of Standards and Self-Certification Plus (SCP) tracking mechanisms.
• Assist the Vice President of Membership & Standards and Program Manager in executing overall membership strategy, including growth, compliance with Standards etc.)
• Develop and maintain tools to provide analysis of current and prospective members as well as the broader NGO sector.
• Develop visual aids (Power Point presentations, etc.) for Board and CEO Level meetings.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelors Degree or higher and 3 years of professional experience in a related field (Non-profit management, Business Administration). Association Management preferred.

Proven knowledge and experience in large scale event planning and production.

Prior experience working with database.

Ability to interface with senior level staff and other senior level partners.

Strong organizational skills including strong office/clerical skills and experience.

High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Advanced skills with MS Excel and Access preferred).

Excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills.

Manager/Senior Manager for Government Relations
 

Position Type: Full-time, long-term
Location: Washington, DC
Reporting to: Senior Director for Public Policy and External Relations
(Policy and Communications Team)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinate outreach to the Executive Branch, facilitating contacts and dialog between senior-level government officials and issue-specialized InterAction colleagues and helping to open new opportunities for promotion of InterAction’s public policy goals on issues such as foreign assistance reform, humanitarian assistance, climate change, food security, and civil–military relations.

Help develop and coordinate an over-arching executive branch outreach strategy, working with InterAction’s senior leadership.

Assist in development of policy positions across teams within InterAction and management of cross team initiatives and projects that directly support InterAction’s policy and advocacy goals.

Gather information on changes in State, USAID, MCC, OGAC, Defense, and USDA policies and practices related to international development and humanitarian assistance.

Produce timely analyses of foreign assistance-related issues for use in advocacy and for InterAction members.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Extensive knowledge of U.S. foreign assistance content and decision-making.

Seven to ten years experience working on foreign assistance related issues, preferably with a federal agency or with an organization that implements foreign-assistance funded projects.

A network of contacts in the foreign assistance and foreign policy-making sphere.

Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team, multi-task, set priorities, adapt to change, solve problems, and work with a wide variety of personality types.

Superior speaking, writing, and interpersonal diplomatic skills.

Master's (or equivalent) degree in a field of study directly related to international development.

Senior Director of Humanitarian Policy

 

InterAction is seeking a Senior Director for Humanitarian Policy to serve as InterAction’s primary staff lead in relations with United Nations humanitarian agencies including dealing with humanitarian reform and various policy issues including protection and displacement.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Represent InterAction at a senior level in dealing with OCHA, UNHCR, UNICEF, UNFPA, ICRC and WFP on humanitarian reform and on protection and displacement issues. Maintain liaison with officials of these agencies at a senior level and organize and attend meetings between them and InterAction members.
  • Represent InterAction and its members at a senior level on international working groups and task forces formed to address issues such as humanitarian space, humanitarian financing, integrated missions, urban displacement, protection standards, gender based violence, sexual abuse and country specific crises, such as Sudan, Somalia, etc.
  • Represent InterAction at international humanitarian policy fora engaging with international groups such as the Good Humanitarian Donorship Initiative, ALNAP, etc., as well as in key conferences on these topics hosted by UN agencies, donor governments, and leading academic institutions.
  • Meet frequently with USG officials responsible for supporting and framing UN humanitarian reform issues, particularly those agencies that have been funding and actively engaged in policy discussions. Convene working groups, as needed, on specific areas of interest that require membership engagement and input at the policy and operational levels. Such issues could include, but not be limited to, needs assessments, humanitarian networks, financing, etc.
  • Represent InterAction in policy discussions on protection and displacement conducted by the United Nations agencies and the Global Protection Cluster and its subsets. Travel occasionally to the field to review implementation of the IASC’s SEA Guidelines.
  • Convene and support the activities of InterAction’s Protection Working Group and Humanitarian Partnerships Working Group as well as their Sub-Working Groups, including those on Gender Based Violence and Sexual Abuse and Exploitation. Assume responsibility for assisting in the drafting and coordination with InterAction members of policy and advocacy statements, letters, and reports on topics within the jurisdiction of these bodies.
  • Establish productive working relationships with and meet regularly with key USAID and State Department officials responsible for framing USG policy responses to protection and displacement issues, helping keep them abreast of thinking within the NGO community.
  • Brief Congressional staff on issues within the Senior Director’s areas of responsibility. Coordinate closely with InterAction’s Public Policy team. Working with InterAction’s congressional liaison staff, arrange meetings for members with congressional staff on these issues. Help prepare congressional testimony on these topics as opportunities arise for InterAction to participate in hearings and formal briefings.
  • Travel regularly to New York, Brussels, Rome and Geneva to represent InterAction at relevant meetings (i.e., Monthly OCHA-InterAction meetings) and to maintain liaison with senior officials of the United Nations humanitarian agencies, the Red Cross Movement, and European based NGO consortia focused on humanitarian response.
  • Staff crisis specific working groups on an occasional basis, as requested by the HPPT team leader.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum fifteen years experience working in humanitarian assistance activities abroad and at headquarters’ level with United Nations agencies and/or the NGO community.
  • Authoritative knowledge of international conventions related to protection and displacement and recognition by UN and NGO senior officials for competence in these issues.
  • Ability to present InterAction’s position on a range of humanitarian policies and assist with developing new policies where needed, meet regularly with senior USG and UN officials, and cogently develop advocacy materials for decision makers and the public.
  • Thorough understanding of the structure and dynamics of the United Nations and the Red Cross Movements as they relates to issues of protection, displacement and humanitarian principles. Familiarity with the IASC and the Global Humanitarian Platform and their activities.
  • Close understanding of NGO values and operational modalities, as well as of the complexity of the NGO communities in the United States and abroad. Ability to be accepted by the NGO community as its occasional spokesperson in policy dialogues with the USG, UN agencies, and foreign based NGO consortia.
  • Freedom to travel frequently to New York and world capitals as well an on occasional field visits representing InterAction.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in relating to the diverse and sometimes conflicting expectations of members of a consultative decision-making body. Patience and persistence in working with international organizations.

Senior Manager for Shelter and Settlements, Humanitarian Policy and Practice Team

InterAction, the nation's largest alliance of international relief and development NGOs, is seeking a full-time Senior Program Manager for Shelter and Settlement to join InterAction's Humanitarian Policy and Practice Team (HPPT).

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

The Senior Manager for Shelter and Settlements will oversee the creation of the North American Shelter and Settlement Network (NASSN), spearhead the activities of the network, drive the work, and lead the effort of connecting the North American humanitarian shelter and settlement actors with one another, as well as with global counterparts. The position requires a technical shelter background and the ability to effectively coordinate and convene multiple actors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, launch and maintain the NASSN in coordination with NGOs, USAID/OFDA and global shelter experts;
  • On behalf of the network, and informed by its membership, the Senior Manager for Shelter and Settlement will forge formal and regularized
  • links with global shelter and settlement groups. This will include travel to Canada, Europe and Latin America to establish partnerships and
  • create linkages with the associations and shelter groups in those areas;
  • Participate in the Emergency Shelter Cluster at the Global Level, and facilitate increased North American NGO participation in the cluster;
  • Identify training needs across the network, and address those needs through workshops and trainings;
  • Material production and best practices collection and dissemination;
  • Facilitate linkages with relevant university programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Senior Manager for Shelter and Settlements will have the following requirements for knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • 10-15 years of experience
  • Degree in architecture, construction management, engineering, urban and regional planning, or related social sciences education
  • Overseas experience in the management of emergency and transitional shelter programs
  • Previous experience (preferably at the field level) in coordination activities involving key stakeholders in humanitarian response (INGOs, local NGOs, UN, donors, etc);
  • Meeting facilitation skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational and multi-tasking skills;
  • Excellent computer skills (Windows);
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment;
  • Proven networking, team building, coordination, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent leadership, negotiation, and administration skills.
  • Availability for domestic and international travel.

Policy & Communications Team, Part-time Administrative Assistant

About the Position:

This is a great opportunity for students or others looking for temporary, part-time work that allows for exposure to the U.S. international NGO community.

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support team members in preparation for internal/external meetings, events and conferences, including handling of related logistics.
