American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee's Response to Horn Of Africa Drought Crisis

Operational Summary:

JDC has been working in Ethiopia for almost 30 years and received a direct request from the ARRA, Ethiopia’s refugee agency, to distribute blankets to refugees in the Dollo Ado camps. Through a partnership with the Jewish Coalition for Disaster Relief, JDC responded by purchasing and distributing 2,500 blankets to Somali refugees who are in need of warmth as the temperatures dropped. JDC is also providing nutritional support in the form of Plumpy Nut which is a 500-calorie ready to use therapeutic food (RUTF) that is packed with calories and vitamins and specially formulated to re-nourish starving children. JDC distributed the Plumpy Nut in the Jijiga refugee camps to 1,084 malnourished children in 2 months.
