Helen Keller International's Response to Crisis in Ivory Coast and Liberia
In Côte D’Ivoire, HKI proposes to prevent malnutrition & micronutrient deficiencies in children 6-24 months by distributing fortified complementary foods and promoting optimal feeding practices. HKI will build on existing partnerships with a local food processing company and the Ministry of Health. HKI will raise awareness about optimal feeding practices, and make fortified foods in 25g packets available for immediate consumption by children. The complementary foods will be fortified with iron, vitamin A, zinc, calcium and iodine, and lipids to provide a high energy content in line with WHO standards. A dose of 25g two times per day, for 30,000 children for 3 months will require 270 metric tons of fortified complementary foods.
