International Relief and Development's Response to Horn Of Africa Drought Crisis

Operational Summary:

IRD is in the recovery phase of programming in Ethiopia & Somalia, focusing on sustainable solutions to drought & famine conditions in the area. Our projects include construction & rehabilitation of community birkits for improved rainwater storage; drought mitigation through improved irrigation systems; & delivery of pharmaceuticals & medical supplies. Prior to this work, IRD implemented a six-month emergency relief program for 22 vulnerable communities that included water trucking & supplies for water purification. By September 2011, IRD was supplying emergency water to 31,000 people in the Dollo Ado & Dollo Bay districts of Ethiopia. We delivered 5,000 liter water tanks, supplied 2,000 jerry cans, & trucked water daily to each village.
