International Rescue Committee's Response to Syria Crisis
The IRC is responding to the Syrian crisis in all surrounding countries receiving refugees. Most refugees are poor and live without legal status. They are also vulnerable to exploitation and violence; the latter is often directed against women. In Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan, the IRC is working on the protection of women and girls, as well as providing medical care, counseling and group/individual support to women affected by gender-based-violence. In addition, we provide hygiene materials, clothing, and financial support. In our two clinics in border cities in Jordan about 100 refugees per day receive care at the clinics; we also provide prescriptions for free medicine at community pharmacies. The IRC has been aiding civilians within Syria, through partnerships with Syrian humanitarian groups. The program allows us to provide essential, life-saving humanitarian supplies to conflict-affected civilian populations inside Syria.
