Mercy Corps's Response to Horn Of Africa Drought Crisis

Operational Summary:

Mercy Corps has helped 1.6 million people in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia survive the worst drought in 60 years and the related food crisis. At the beginning, Mercy Corps focused on getting humanitarian aid to the hardest-hit areas. Now, while our ongoing programs – emergency nutrition; water, sanitation and hygiene; cash-for-work; and providing daily essentials – continue to address immediate needs, we are linking these activities to longer-term programming that builds resilience to future cycles of drought and famine. We’ll be helping people restart pastoralist supply chains, diversify their income sources, improve the health of their livestock and better manage their water supplies.
