Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) is the systematic development and application of policies, strategies and practices that minimize vulnerabilities and disaster risks throughout a society. DRR activities help mitigate the adverse impacts of hazards and prepare communities for potential hazards, many of which will be exacerbated by climate change.
The first independent study assessing the progress undertaken in implementing the Hyogo Framework for Action at local level identifies a significant gap between national and local level action. The report, Views from the Frontline, conducted by the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction, was completed in June 2009 for presentation at the Second Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction.
