Malnutrition rates in southern Chad are reaching critical levels, according to International Medical Corps’ assessments in the region. In Aboudeia health district nearly ten percent of girls under age five may be suffering from severe acute malnutrition. As the assessment was conducted at the beginning of Chad’s lean season and malnutrition rates are expected to worsen, International Medical Corps is urging the international community to immediately step up support before affected communities slide further into crisis.

The House Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations on Friday voted for only $40.6 billion in funding for fiscal year 2014, effectively gutting spending for key international programs that seek to help people lift themselves out of extreme poverty. The cuts spelled out in the 2014 State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Act are so severe they could roll back significant gains if adopted by the full Congress, NGO alliance InterAction warned.x

Tensions in Lebanese communities are reaching a tipping point as refugees fleeing deadly violence in neighboring Syria continue to pour into the country, putting children further at risk, aid agency World Vision warns in a new study out Monday. With predictions that a third of Lebanon’s population could be made up of refugees by the end of the year – and no end in sight for the crisis – the strain is leading to security concerns, increased resentment and a tinderbox-like atmosphere. There are concerns a secondary humanitarian crisis could erupt in Lebanon if nothing is done to ease the strain.
