In a context where donors and implementers are increasingly advocating for experimental studies as the best way to show program value, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is seeking to highlight the importance of mixed methods assessments to track and inform development programming. Over the last several years, AKDN has developed and implemented a Quality of Life assessment that aims to capture changes not only in material standards of living but health, education, the natural and built environments, culture, and civil society.  AKDN is also exploring values and norms vital to sustaining improvements in the overall “Quality of Life”, such as pluralism and cultural tolerance, gender and social equity and good governance. In this presentation, AKDN’s Director of the Quality of Life program, Dr. Nazneen Kanji, shares findings from her research on Quality of Life and some of its implications for AKDN's multiple-input area development strategy.

Presented by Sophie Walker and Alison Hemberger, Mission Measurement*A growing number of NGOs are engaging in agency-level measurement to aggregate, analyze, and improve their impact across programs. However, this effort continues to present many challenges. In this webinar, which builds on the 2012 InterAction Forum session on this topic, Mission Measurement shares findings from its research and client experiences about the successful implementation of agency-wide measurement approaches such as “core indicators,” as well as practical solutions that have worked for NGOs.  By integrating effective measurement practices across programs, organizations are able to capture and broadly demonstrate value, make course corrections, influence resource allocation, and drive strategy.*Mission Measurement is a strategy consultancy that helps its clients measure and improve their social impact. Sophie Walker and Alison Hemberger have worked with a range of NGOs and funders to help build M&E capacity as well as use measurement to drive organizational strategy, investment decisions, and program design.

Combined presentation from an InterAction Forum 2012 workshop on Measuring Agency-Level Results. The desire for "agency-level" results has been expressed and explored by international NGOs for many years, but it is frequently still unclear how such results can be used in a meaningful - and nonpromotional - way. This workshop explored some approaches used by different NGOs to measure and capture these types of results. Speakers reflected on challenges such as vague missions, diverse programmatic interests, insufficient resources and conflicting agendas. They also addressed how agency-level results can work, and most importantly, what analyzing them can mean to an organization and what role that analysis can play in internal learning and improvement.
