As members of the international community gather in Kabul for the International Conference on Afghanistan, InterAction is pleased that the expected focus of the conference is “Afghan priorities for the Afghan people”. As a coalition with members that have had humanitarian and development operations in Afghanistan for decades, InterAction urges close attention to the following recommendations:Increase funding for humanitarian activities and prioritize improved access to vulnerable populations.Ensure international assistance is driven by Afghan and long-term development needs, not short-term political objectives.Give particular attention to vulnerable groups.Deliver assistance equitably throughout the country.Improve the delivery of services throughout the country at the local level.Strengthen the existing coordination mechanism for the delivery of humanitarian and development aid.The Kabul Conference offers an opportunity for the Afghan government, the United Nations, international delegations, the international aid community and civil society to demonstrate a genuine commitment to the Afghan people by addressing their humanitarian and development priorities. However, these plans and programs will only bear fruit if they are followed by a realistic plan of action, committed implementation, and a process that is broadly inclusive of and monitored by all parties, including civil society actors.

This is a step-by-step guide to assist InterAction members in developing and implementing policies to prevent and respond to sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) of beneficiaries and vulnerable members of the community in countries where members work. The intention is to make the process easily understandable and applicable to one’s own organization so that any staff person at any organization can pick up the guide and use it to get started—or to enhance and expand on what they already have in place. While the text of this guide is designed to review the steps as if they come in a chronological order, this may not be the way your organization will deal with these steps in reality. It is expected that the content of the guide will need to be adapted to more accurately fit the mission and mandate of each agency.

InterAction has published, Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): The Road Forward for the U.S., a policy paper that outlines key recommendations from U.S.-based international NGOs on each of the eight MDGs. The NGO community strongly believes the Obama administration should include these recommendations in its promised global plan to be presented at the MDG Summit in September 2010.

Letter from InterAction's President & CEO Samuel A. Worthington to USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah and Deputy Secretary of State Jack Lew to follow-up recent visits to Pakistan made by the two officials. The letter highlights the current humanitarian situation in Pakistan and the lack of adequate funding from the international community to address ongoing needs. The letter introduces a policy note from the in-country NGO coordination entity, the Pakistan Humanitarian Forum (PHF). This policy note provides a more in-depth look at these issues and is linked here.
