The January 12, 2010, earthquake brought the educational system in Haiti to a screeching halt, affecting
approximately 2.5 million children. According to the Post Disaster Needs Assessment conducted by the
government of Haiti, sector damages and losses amounted to over $477 million and will require more than
$600 million to be fully reconstructed. Rubble clearance has posed the greatest challenge in the effort to
reconstruct schools.
