Health Sector Summary
Inadequate health services and a lack of access to them, combined with sub-standard sanitation systems,
place Haiti at the bottom in terms of health in the Western hemisphere. With approximately 40 doctors per
100,000 Haitians, approximately 25 percent of births are attended by a skilled professional. The situation
deteriorated on January 12, 2010, and has been further affected by the cholera epidemic, which has
claimed thousands of lives. The government of Haiti has estimated that over $600 million will be required
over a three year period for the recovery and reconstruction of the health sector.
