Secretary of State Hillary Clinton unveiled the final report of the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review (QDDR). The report provides a blueprint for elevating American "civilian power" to better advance national interests and to be a better partner to the U.S. military. Please visit http://www.interaction.org/qddr for initial reactions from InterAction and several of our member NGOs. Also, please note that InterAction’s President & CEO Sam Worthington weighed in on the aspects of the QDDR that address the U.S. governement’s humanitarian response capacity in a piece on the Huffington Post today. Find it here.
Not to be missed among the excitement surrounding the long-awaited release of the QDDR was the administration’s release of a summary of its assessment of its Afghanistan and Pakistan strategy (find an overview statement from the administration here). InterAction responded in a press statement today urging “the Administration to emphasize effective, long-term, community-based development throughout the countries.” Find InterAction’s statement here:
Also not to be overlooked are the continuing needs in Haiti; find a list of InterAction members who are responding to the cholera outbreak here.
As Sudan enters the final weeks before its referendum, USAID Assistant Administrator for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance Nancy Lindborg and U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan Scott Gration returned late last week from a trip there.
