World Conference On Humanitarian Studies 2013
The Third World Conference on Humanitarian Studies will be organised jointly with the Third Istanbul Human Security Conference on: 24-27 October 2013.
As a close collaboration between the International Humanitarian Studies Association (IHSA), the Centre for Peace and Reconciliation Studies (CPRS) at Coventry University and Kadir Has University in Istanbul, the conference will be hosted by Kadir Has in Istanbul. The Human Security: Humanitarian Perspectives and Responses conference brings together two annual events, the Istanbul Human Security Conference and the World Conference on Humanitarian Studies.
We warmly invite proposals for panel sessions that address our four conference themes in innovative and interactive formats to engage both the academic and practitioner communities.

GPPi is seeking proposals for panels for the third World Conference on Humanitarian Studies, set for 24-27 October 2013 in Istanbul. The conference will explore how humanitarian perspectives and approaches can be used to analyze and address threats to human security as they arise in different crises across the globe.
Titled “Human Security: Humanitarian Perspectives and Responses,” the conference will be jointly organized by the International Humanitarian Studies Association, the Centre for Peace and Reconciliation Studies (CPRS) at Coventry University and Kadir Has University in Istanbul.
The conference has been divided into four main themes. GPPi, in collaboration with CPRS, is calling for panel proposals that fit under one of those themes – “New Players in the Humanitarian Arena, with Special Attention to Turkey.”
There has been a lot of concern about the role of new players in the humanitarian arena, including donors, agencies and political key figures. But what do we actually know about these players? GPPi seeks panels that concern Turkey’s human security and humanitarian challenges, both as a context and donor country. We also welcome panels that more broadly address new players. This may also include panels on the influence of new media on crises and crisis response. What are the emerging trends in the use of mass media and social media in framing and responding to humanitarian crises?
Panel organizers are requested to:
- Submit a 200-word proposal.
- Upon approval of the panel, solicit contributors and evaluate submissions.
- Organize the panel: find a chair; consider the need for special funding of participants; maintain communication with the conference team.
Please note the following deadlines:
- 4 April 2013 for panel proposals.
- 1 September 2013 for paper proposals and early bird registration.
