International development refers to the goal of improving the social and economic circumstances of the world's poorest, most vulnerable people in a sustainable manner. The Millennium Development Goals, agreed to by 189 countries at the 2000 United Nations Millennium Summit, have become the guiding force behind international development efforts and call for the eradication of poverty and hunger, universal primary education, gender equality, improvements in child and maternal health, the prevention of HIV/AIDS and other deadly diseases, clean water for all and environmental sustainability.

InterAction's work on international development focuses on several of these areas, including:

The advancement of gender equality is fundamental to development effectiveness and is also a cross-cutting priority for InterAction's work.

Ultimately, the NGO community seeks to promote sustainable international development, which entails allocating resources more equitably, exchanging knowledge and transferring skills among the world's peoples—without compromising the environment or the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
