The InterAction Internship Program
InterAction offers internship opportunities along two tracks – Program and Executive – three times each year, roughly corresponding to academic semesters spring, summer and fall. Applications for 2008 internships should be received by January 12, April 14, and August 18 for the spring, summer and fall semesters respectively, but check each team description below for more details.
Interns receive a stipend of up to $50.00 per month toward the costs of traveling to and from InterAction.
All internship applicants must be currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs, able to work with minimum supervision and commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week to be considered. Applicants should have excellent written and spoken English skills, strong computer skills (including Microsoft Word and Excel) and good interpersonal and organizational skills.
2008 Executive Internship Openings
Executive Track interns work with the Office of the President or the Finance & Administration Team. Interns will have the opportunity to learn professional-level skills in nonprofit management, administration and communication. Applicants will be pursuing a degree in business administration or finance with a demonstrated interest in international affairs or nonprofit management.

The Office of the President offers one unpaid internship each semester to perform a variety of basic administrative support functions in a fast-paced and highly confidential environment. The position affords interns a comprehensive view of the executive administration of a major nonprofit and the entire landscape of activities throughout InterAction. Specific responsibilities may include record-keeping, organizing briefing books for the CEO, communicating with member CEOs and high-level contacts, assisting with travel, event coordination, and other assignments as required. The fall 2008 internship with the Office of the President is filled. Please consider applying again next year.
The Finance & Administration Team offers one unpaid internship each semester to perform a variety of basic administrative support functions requiring a high level of detail and involving sensitive information. The position affords interns “real world” experience in the financial administration of a major humanitarian and development nonprofit. Specific responsibilities may include record-keeping, reviewing invoices and reimbursement requests, responding to general inquiries about the organization, and other assignments as required.
2008 Program Internship Openings
Program Track interns work with the Humanitarian Policy & Practice Team, the Membership & Standards Team, or the Public Policy & Outreach Team or the Policy Research Center. Interns will have the opportunity to work with professionals from leading humanitarian and development NGOs or government agencies. Competitive applicants will have completed a minimum of three years of undergraduate coursework in government/political science, development, international affairs or public policy and will preferably be working towards a graduate degree. Experience in creating or maintaining online information (using Dreamweaver or other HTML/WYSIWYG editors), or expressed interest in learning, is a strong plus.

The Humanitarian Policy and Practice Team offers one unpaid internship each semester in each of three areas: Disaster Response, Protection and Refugee Affairs, and Security Coordination. Interns perform a variety of research, writing and administrative support tasks with the opportunity to attend meetings and interact with professionals from a variety of NGOs active in the humanitarian community. Applications are being accepted for fall 2008 internships.
The Membership and Standards Team offers one or two unpaid internships each semester to perform a variety of tasks related to nonprofit governance, NGO accountability and program effectiveness, as well as assisting with InterAction's Annual Forum, membership recruitment and retention efforts, and maintaining and improving communication with the member organizations. Applications are being accepted for fall 2008 internships.
The Public Policy and Outreach Team offers one or two unpaid internships each semester. Responsibilities may include assisting in preparing a weekly summary of legislative news, attending hearings and briefings as needed, researching legislative action that affects the international development community, writing original articles and online companion pieces for our flagship publication Monday Developments, and updating the InterAction's website and online profiles with legislative, member and program updates as necessary. The NGO Policy Research Center offers one to two unpaid internships each semester to serve as research assistants for on-going research projects on U.S. foreign assistance and U.S. development and humanitarian response policy. Responsibilities include drafting research summaries; gathering and analyzing data; drafting and proofreading reports; and coordinating logistics for meetings, events, focus groups, and interviews. Applications are being accepted for fall 2008 internships.
