2009 G8 Summit

"There is no reason why Africa cannot be self-sufficient when it comes to food. It has sufficient arable land. What's lacking is the right seeds, the right irrigation, but also the kinds of institutional mechanisms that ensure that a farmer is going to be able to grow crops, get them to market, get a fair price. And so all these things have to be part of a comprehensive plan, and that's what I was trying to underscore during the meeting today."

- President Barack Obama

Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi hosted his counterparts from Canada, France, Japan, Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union at La Maddalena, Italy the week  of July 8 - 10, 2009 for the 2009 G8 Summit. The Summit has been addressing four major areas: the process of dialogue with emerging countries, Millennium goals, climate change and development and Africa. Along these lines, InterAction and its members have issued six position papers (at right) to call attention where we believe the U.S. Government can play a leadership role.
