Malnutrition rates in southern Chad are reaching critical levels, according to International Medical Corps’ assessments in the region. In Aboudeia health district nearly ten percent of girls under age five may be suffering from severe acute malnutrition. As the assessment was conducted at the beginning of Chad’s lean season and malnutrition rates are expected to worsen, International Medical Corps is urging the international community to immediately step up support before affected communities slide further into crisis.

Tensions in Lebanese communities are reaching a tipping point as refugees fleeing deadly violence in neighboring Syria continue to pour into the country, putting children further at risk, aid agency World Vision warns in a new study out Monday. With predictions that a third of Lebanon’s population could be made up of refugees by the end of the year – and no end in sight for the crisis – the strain is leading to security concerns, increased resentment and a tinderbox-like atmosphere. There are concerns a secondary humanitarian crisis could erupt in Lebanon if nothing is done to ease the strain.

This World Refugee Day, June 20, International Medical Corps stands with the 45.2 million refugees and internally displaced people who lack basic resources after being driven from their homes due to conflict or natural disaster. Since its inception in 1984, the organization has supported refugees throughout sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Asia with vital health care and training programs to restore self-reliance. In response to the current Syrian crisis which has resulted in over 93,000 deaths and forced 1.6 million (UNHCR) Syrians to flee to neighboring countries, International Medical Corps is implementing critical health and mental health programs throughout the region.

The G8’s confirmation that the Geneva II peace conference will definitely go ahead is finally some good news for Syria’s children, says aid agency World Vision.“These talks represent the best chance Syria’s children have had in more than two years for a future free from fear and violence,” said Anita Delhaas-van Dijk, World Vision’s National Director in Lebanon. "Including all relevant parties, however, is vital so the G8 pledge is a welcome first step, and we hope they can use their collective influence to bring all parties to the table in Geneva.”

Three million children have been affected so far, and the numbers will continue to rise as the conflict continues.
