 At least 100 homes in Lata have been completely destroyed by a one meter sea surge following today's 8.0 earthquake, according to Christian humanitarian organization World Vision. Water and electricity remain down as well. Government officials have confirmed four deaths in the islands, and there are unconfirmed reports that some people and fishing boats may have been swept out to sea by the surge. Lata is a township in the Solomon Islands' Temoto Province that was hardest-hit by Wednesday's quake.

New legislation designed to avert the “fiscal cliff” is likely to create another kind of precipitous drop ― in charitable giving. A just-released survey by Ipsos Public Affairs on behalf of ChildFund International finds that the return to the 6.2 percent payroll tax, an increase of 2 percent, will lead one in five Americans to reduce their charitable giving by an average of 29 percent.

The Basic Education Coalition (BEC) announces the release of its recommendations to shape a new set of global education goals.  In Each Child Learning, Every Student a Graduate, the Coalition stresses that education must remain a priority of any new global strategy.
