This Tuesday afternoon session focused on the varied factors that impact food security including climate change, natural resource degradation, and population growth. Panelists discussed the changing role of agriculture in the broader development context. Increased funding and leadership have made food security an important development topic. Panelists agreed that public-private partnerships and innovation are key to creating sustainable solutions.
This Wednesday morning session brought together U.S. and foreign government officials as well as the founder of a citizen-based initiative in East Africa to discuss investment in sustainable development. The panelists emphasized that development was a long-term issue that involved many complicated factors. The Minister of Finance of Timor-Leste and the Minister of Planning and Economic Affairs of Liberia both called for a greater focus on local-driven solutions and collaboration with local partners.
One of the final sessions of the forum explored the increasingly diverse group of participants in development issues. The panel consisted of four speakers—Barbara Bush, Mandy Moore, Kay Warren, and Jim Kolbe. They stressed the importance of mobilizing an array of constituents, especially faith-based communities and young people, and creating personal narratives to powerfully convey messages.
