GIARDIASIS:

Learn about other diseases

Giardiasis is a diarrheal illness caused by a one-celled, microscopic parasite. Because an outer shell protects the parasite, it can survive outside the body and in the environment for long periods of time.

Cause: The Giardia parasite lives in the intestine of infected humans or animals. Millions of germs can be released in a bowel movement from an infected human or animal. Infection can occur after accidentally swallowing the parasite. Infection cannot occur through contact with blood.

Symptoms: There are a variety of intestinal symptoms, which include diarrhea, gas or flatulence, greasy stools, stomach cramps, upset stomach or nausea.
