THE ISSUE:
On July 15, the leaders of the Group of Eight
industrialized nations (the G8) met in St. Petersburg, Russia
for their annual summit. Last year’s Summit in Scotland was a galvanizing
event for civil society organizations pushing for an end to global
poverty, with the G8 leaders agreeing to double aid to Africa and increase
aid to developing countries by $50 billion a year. Although global
poverty does not seem to be as high on the agenda this year, anti-poverty
organizations hope that the G8 will keep last year’s
promises.
