Institute for Sustainable Communities (ISC)

Statement of Purpose

The mission of ISC is to help communities around the world address environmental, economic, and social challenges to build a better future shaped and shared by all.

ISC helps communities in existing and emerging democracies solve problems while building a better future for themselves and the world. We give communities- and the organizations that support them- the training, advice, and grants they need to solve their own problems and shape their own destiny long after our work with them is finished.

Programs & Activities

Community Action. Helping communities create a shared vision, set priorities, solve problems, and increase their ability to address issues in the future.

Education. Developing a new generation of leaders through school-based programs linked to community issues.

Civil Society. Strengthening nonprofit organizations that provide a bridge between citizens and governments to become more effective, responsive, and visible to their constituents.

Environment. Solving local environmental problems, such as forest degradation and air and water pollution, in an inexpensive way that is easy for other communities to duplicate.
Business Development. Encouraging businesses, from entrepreneurs to large corporations, to make strategic, responsible choices and participate fully in their communities.
