Africare
Statement of Purpose Africare works to improve the quality of life in Africa, with programs in food, water, the environment, health, emergency humanitarian aid, private-sector development and governance. Africare now supports more than 150 self-help development programs in 26 nations of Africa.  
Programs & Activities
Agriculture and Food Production
Africare supports production of grain, vegetables, fruit and all types of livestock; provides animal traction; improves irrigation systems; and supports natural resource management (e.g. reforestation, soil conservation, agroforestry). It also assists with storage, post-harvest handling and processing of crops, and promotes agribusiness development at local, regional and national levels.
AIDS/HIV
The goal of Africare's HIV/AIDS strategy is to arrest the current pandemic and prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa by mobilizing communities, and national and regional leaders to take informed action. The strategy is designed to empower individuals, local community-based organizations and whole communities to talk openly about the disease, to begin to make informed choices, and to take action to address HIV/AIDS related problems wherever they occur.
Community Development
Africare supports infrastructural development as well as development of community organizations, such as agricultural and credit cooperatives, and village health committees.
Construction
Africare builds rural access roads and constructs buildings, water systems and health centers.
Debt-for-Development
Africare has participated in debt-for-development transactions in several African countries.
Democratic Development
Africare provides training in democratic governance. It also provides technical, advisory and managerial assistance on private-sector development to individual organizations, umbrella organizations and national planning sectors.
Development Education
Africare works to educate Americans on African development.
Disaster and Emergency Relief
Africare assists refugees and displaced persons, war-orphaned children, and victims of natural disasters such as flooding and drought. It provides material aid, medical care, and water and sanitation systems at crises’ peaks. It also assists with resettlement and training to regain self-reliance.
Education
Africare conducts training in adult literacy, technical matters (agriculture, health, etc.), organizational management, enterprise development and democratic governance.
Enterprise Development, Cooperatives and Credit
Africare supports credit programs and provides technical, advisory and managerial assistance to small businesses, umbrella organizations and national planning sectors.
Environmental and Natural Resource Management
Africare supports reforestation, agroforestry, soil conservation and water resource development at village and regional levels. It provides village and regional training in natural resource management and introduces innovative technologies.
Information and Communications
Africare produces technical training and public education materials in health and agriculture.
Institutional and Human Resource Development and Management Assistance
Africare provides institutional and human resource development assistance to village, regional and national organizations as a part of enterprise development.
Material Aid
Africare provides blankets, medicine, food, cooking utensils, farm tools, seed and other emergency material aid to victims of crises. It also provides equipment and supplies for long-term development projects, including innovative technologies on a pilot/demonstration basis.
Medicine and Public Health
Africare provides medicine, medical equipment and supplies, as well as health care services. It works to reorganize medical distribution systems and conduct comprehensive health planning. It constructs dispensaries, health centers and sanitation systems; trains village health teams and national/regional health personnel; and develops health training materials. Major programs focus on child survival, family planning, river blindness control, AIDS/HIV prevention, pharmaceutical management and rural sanitation.
Nutrition
Africare trains village groups and regional/national health personnel in family nutrition. It also supports village-based projects to improve nutrition through better food production.
Population and Family Planning
Africare provides family planning equipment and supplies. It trains local, regional and national providers of family planning services. It also supports broad-based family planning education and distribution of family planning supplies.
Refugee Assistance
Africare provides emergency material aid and provides training and resettlement assistance working with both refugees and displaced persons.
Strengthening of Civil Society
Africare provides training in democratic governance. It also provides technical, advisory and managerial assistance on private sector development to individual organizations, umbrella organizations and national planning sectors.
Water Resources Development
Africare constructs and improves agricultural irrigation systems. It increases community water supplies for household use. It manages the use and conservation of water as a part of overall environmental management. Africare combines clean water sources, sanitation technology and sanitation education to improve community health. At camps for refugees and displaced persons, as well as during severe droughts, Africare puts in place emergency water supplies.
Women in Development
Africare provides technical, advisory and managerial assistance to women’s businesses; provides developmental and special-project support to regional and national women’s groups; supports women’s agricultural projects; and supports women’s health and maternal/child health programs. |
