AmeriCares
Statement of Purpose AmeriCares is a nonprofit disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization, which provides immediate response to emergency medical needs—and supports long-term humanitarian assistance programs-— for people around the world, irrespective of race, creed or political persuasion.
Programs & Activities
Global Medical Assistance Program
AmeriCares largest assistance program provides medicines and medical supplies to healthcare institutions on an ongoing basis in 38 countries. We assess pressing patient needs, local health priorities, as well as trends and shifts in disease patterns. AmeriCares matches these health care needs with our donated inventory, or by soliciting targeted donations from our pharmaceutical partners. This allows us to provide our partners with medicines and supplies that are routinely out of stock, locally inaccessible or cost prohibitive. AmeriCares network of partners includes international and local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), hospital and clinic networks, and Ministries of Health around the world.
Emergency Response
Since 1982, AmeriCares has responded to emergencies large and small, man-made and natural, across the country and around the globe. We deliver assistance for high profile disasters such as Hurricane Katrina as well as ‘silent disasters’ that never capture the headlines, such as serve flooding that left thousands of residents homeless in Mozambique in February 2007. AmeriCares responds to rapid on-set emergencies, exemplified by the 2007 earthquake in Peru, where we delivered aid within a matter of days. Whether in times of epic disaster or daily struggle, AmeriCares helps people in crisis wherever they are, whenever they need it.
AmeriCares also supports protracted relief efforts to the victims of complex emergencies including the refugee crisis in Darfur, Sudan. In addition, we administer grants to help communities rebuild after a crisis has passed, including our d continued commitment to the communities devastated by the 2004 Southeast Asian tsunami.
Medical Outreach Program
Since 1991, AmeriCares has supported medical volunteerism by providing medicines and supplies to thousands of teams of US-based doctors and health care professionals who travel overseas to give free care. These dedicated doctors and nurses, hailing from 48 states, donate their time and skills to treat some of the most disadvantaged and marginalized people in the world. Some teams of highly-skilled surgeons conduct sophisticated orthopedic and reconstructive procedures at hospitals that lack the specialized doctors trained to undertake the operations. Last year, AmeriCares supported 840 medical volunteer teams, traveling to 70 countries and donating $21 million in medicines and medical supplies.
Community Programs
In addition to our Global Programs, AmeriCares operates three community programs: AmeriCares Free Clinics, Camp AmeriKids and AmeriCares HomeFront. Through these programs, we mobilize volunteers to deliver free health care services to the uninsured; provide summer camp and leadership opportunities to children impacted by HIV/AIDS; and repair homes for the elderly, the poor and the disabled. |
