Global Links

Statement of Purpose

Global Links is dedicated to recycling surplus medical supplies and equipment, for use by healthcare institutions in developing countries. To achieve this mission, Global Links collects batch and single item supplies and equipment that are still valuable but are no longer in demand in the United States due to procedural excess, technological change, regulatory requirements, or production overage, and distributes them to selected healthcare facilities in developing countries.

Global Links gives U.S. healthcare providers and suppliers an environmentally and socially responsible alternative to the disposal of medical materials, while simultaneously aiming to ensure that one hundred percent of the medical materials it ships are needed and can be used.

Global Links' programs serve healthcare facilities in developing countries, regardless of their religious or political affiliations, which provide medical care to people in need.

Global Links continues to identify opportunities to improve its current programs, while striving to expand its efforts by increasing the quantity of medical supplies that are recycled and the number of recipients who can make use of them.

Programs & Activities

Cuba Medical Aid Program
Global Links has delivered more medical aid to Cuba than any other U.S. charity since the inception of the Cuba Medical Aid program in 1994. All donations have been licensed by the U.S. government. Shipments have included specialized medical equipment, hospital beds and furnishings, medical supplies, and pharmaceuticals. This program receives support and cooperation in Cuba from the local office of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and from the Minister of Public Health whose in-country assistance assures that all shipments meet identified needs throughout the island, and are distributed promptly and correctly.

Honduras Medical Aid Program
In partnership with the Honduras Office of PAHO, this program provides on-going assistance to public hospitals and health clinics suffering from significant shortages of medical resources needed to address the basic health needs of poor people in the region. Global Links has donated medical supplies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals reaching 20 institutions in 11 of the 17 Honduran provinces. On-going feedback from recipient hospitals through detailed questionnaires allows Global Links to closely monitor and continually improve both the quality and the suitability of their donations to Honduras. This effort is also supported by the Honduran Secretary of Health.

Jamaica Medical Aid Program
A 10-year partnership with PAHO and the Jamaica Medical Assistance Committee, Global Links has sent medical equipment and furnishings, hospital supplies, and medicines for use in the public health care system throughout Jamaica. To ensure that all donations can be used promptly and efficiently, the Jamaica Medical Aid Program operates in accordance with guidelines developed by Jamaican Ministry of Health and in response to specified areas of need in the local health services.

Bolivia Medical Aid Program
Global Links began working in conjunction with the Bolivia office of PAHO and the First Lady’s organization in 2000 to provide ongoing support to Bolivia’s healthcare system. In addition to supporting the First Lady’s Organization’s program to improve poorly equipped healthcare facilities, Global Links is also supporting their Vision Screening Program for School-Age Children, which focuses on early detection and correction of vision problems. To this end, Global Links has sent several pieces of ophthalmic equipment to be used by the program, in addition to donated medical supplies and equipment.

Suture Donation Program
Hospitals and clinics in developing countries face ongoing suture shortages. The Suture Donation Program is a partnership with US hospitals designed to collect surplus sterile sutures to be sent to clinics and hospitals in developing countries around the world. Global Links has established a steady supply of surplus sutures from participating hospitals and therefore can match the specific needs of overseas recipients.
