Mercy Corps
Statement of Purpose Mercy Corps works amid disasters, conflicts, chronic poverty and instability to unleash the potential of people who can win against nearly impossible odds. Since 1979, Mercy Corps has provided $1.5 billion in assistance to people in 106 nations. Supported by headquarters offices in North America and Europe, the agency's global programs employ 3,500 staff worldwide and reach more than 16.4 million people in more than 35 countries. Over the past five years, more than 89 percent of the agency's resources have been allocated directly to programs that help people in need.
Programs & Activities
Civil Society Initiatives
Mercy Corps incorporates civil society initiatives into all projects to promote participation, accountability, and peaceful change. We work to build the capacity of local organizations, businesses, governments and individuals to advocate and collaborate for positive social change.
Emergency Response and Operations
Mercy Corps provides timely emergency aid to people afflicted by conflict and natural disaster while laying the groundwork for longer-term assistance. Mercy Corps’ Global Emergency Operations team addresses humanitarian crises worldwide and serves as a technical resource on issues such as SPHERE standards, emergency preparedness and security.
Economic Development
Mercy Corps’ economic development programs provide loans and training to help families expand small businesses and increase household income. Mercy Corps and its partners operate credit and business training programs in Central Asia, Mongolia, the Balkans, Lebanon, Central America and the United States.
Food Resources
Mercy Corps’ food programs focus on vulnerable groups, such as refugees, children, and the elderly. Our programs provide direct assistance in ways that build self-reliance and local capacity so that responsibility for these programs can be transferred to community organizations. Mercy Corps also leverages monetized commodities to put resources into a food deficit region.
Health
Mercy Corps promotes community-based public health interventions, including maternal and child health education, clinic and hospital construction, and emergency medical aid. Mercy Corps’ health program priorities include preventive community-based health education in relief/disaster contexts, maternal and child health, reproductive health, and psychosocial support.
Material Aid
Mercy Corps' material aid program - the distribution of food, clothing, blankets, medicines and medical supplies, agricultural supplies and building materials - meets immediate needs while laying the groundwork for longer-term development. |
