Project HOPE (HOPE)

Statement of Purpose

It is Project HOPE’s mission to achieve sustainable advances in health care around the world by implementing health education programs, conducting health policy research, and providing humanitarian assistance in areas of need; thereby contributing to human dignity, promoting international understanding, and enhancing social and economic development. The essence of Project HOPE is teaching; the basis is partnership.

Programs & Activities

Child Survival, Maternal and Child Health
Working through local agencies, Project HOPE's Mother and Child Health programs educate mothers, family members, and health providers to prevent diseases and manage sick children in the home and the primary care center, using state-of-the-art international protocols. The goal of these programs is to leave behind qualified agencies, professional staff, and volunteers who can manage such programs effectively, teach people in their communities to prevent and treat disease, and make efficient use of locally available health resources. By teaching people to help themselves, Project HOPE helps develop long-term, sustainable systems, which improves health and empowers health staff and families.

Micro-enterprise and Community Health
As part of Project HOPE’s ongoing efforts to provide long-term solutions to health problems, an innovative program was developed to improve the health and quality of life of impoverished women and their families. Project HOPE operates more than 600 Village Health Banks. The truly astounding results of this program are the improvements in lifestyle and health, as well as the remarkable level of loan repayment.

Women’s Health/Reproductive Health
Project HOPE is actively expanding its focus on reproductive health issues - addressing pregnancy-related health care, HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), and breast and cervical cancer. Through HOPE's women’s, maternal and child health programs and the Village Health Banking programs, women are learning about, and receiving, prenatal and postnatal care, and health care providers are being trained to improve diagnostic, treatment, and counseling skills.

Chronic Diseases (Aging, Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular)
Project HOPE has established regional patient education and health professional training programs to address chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Today, HOPE operates these types of training programs in high-risk regions in China and Eastern Europe.

Infectious Diseases (HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis)
Project HOPE is conducting region-wide prevention and awareness programs for HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis Management throughout Africa and the Central Asian Republics respectively. Project HOPE conducts TB Management and Treatment Programs in the Central Asian Republics. In Malawi, HOPE is collaborating with local Malawi Steering Committees and the Malawi Ministry of Labor to develop educational programs that will lead to the development of national policies and model workplace programs to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Multidisciplinary Health and Medical Education Training
Both on-site and visiting physicians, nurses, and other health experts share their skills and knowledge with partner organizations in emerging countries on five continents. Those trained by HOPE teach their new skills to other local staff, thereby sustaining and extending/multiplying the benefits of each individual training program. HOPE's educational programs provide health and medical education to professionals dealing with a variety of health issues including primary care and preventive health and disease management. HOPE trains and supports health care managers from government agencies and local organizations, and develops and operates higher education programs including health management and medical and nursing courses.

Health Care Management
HOPE's Health Care Management Training programs teach management techniques to teams of health care professionals in Eastern Europe. Teams are taught to recognize their role within the medical facility, utilize human resources strategies, carry out quality improvement, and improve resource allocation. After completing the training and the accompanying projects, teams implement their projects in their respective hospitals.

Biomedical Engineering (BME)
The BME program has provided technical training and healthcare technology consulting with over 20 programs since 1970, and translated training and maintenance materials into six different languages. These programs provide a wide range of services based upon an individual country's needs including assessments of existing technology and recommendations for life cycle management, training, and staffing requirements in order to sustain newer technologies. HOPE BME programs have developed prepackaged teaching modules for clinical laboratory, radiology and anesthesia devices.

Emergency Medical Systems
Project HOPE has developed emergency medical systems region-wide in Costa Rica and Colombia. These programs have improved these populations’ immediate response and access to care. Through these programs HOPE has provided advanced life-support training, ambulances, and emergency medical services equipment. These programs have been implemented and initiated working with local Ministries of Health, hospitals, and local clinics.

Substance Abuse Prevention
Project HOPE's methodology for addressing this need is achieved by teaching prevention in primary schools. The program is based on research conducted by HOPE that showed an urgent need to decrease the use of drugs among secondary school students. HOPE developed a curriculum called Useful Habits, and trains educators to teach students about substance abuse prevention.

Rehabilitation
Project HOPE has developed pediatric and adult rehabilitation programs in response to disasters in Armenia, El Salvador, Bosnia, and Turkey. Project HOPE implements ongoing state-of-the-art rehabilitation services in Bosnia and Turkey by providing hands-on training and equipment, where a HOPE therapist mentors a local therapist to provide care to patients and families: Project HOPE established a pediatric physical rehabilitation program in Bosnia to help children injured by war and those with existing illnesses. The program continues to provide training to physical therapists in the region, and uses modern techniques and family investment to help children improve their physical abilities. In 1999, Project HOPE developed a pediatric and adult physical rehabilitation training center in Turkey training local professionals to provide physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as orthotic and prosthetic care.

Facilities Development
Project HOPE has been involved in hospital and clinic construction and design since 1974. HOPE also operates many programs that improve access to care by providing consultation and assistance to hospitals, local clinics, and Ministries of Health. As part of its facilities development capability, HOPE offers health system development, equipment donation and training. By facilitating public and private partnerships, by providing health care expertise, HOPE successfully develops and/or transforms existing structures into state-of-the-art health care systems.

Humanitarian Assistance
HOPE's relationships with Ministries of Health and its reputation for providing long-term medical aid has given HOPE an opportunity to provide emergency medical supplies and assistance around the world in response to emergency situations and ongoing needs.

Health Policy
Project HOPE provides insight into health policy and research through our Center for Health Affairs and our Health Affairs journal. The Center for Health Affairs provides objective research and policy analysis on both United States and foreign health systems. The Health Affairs Journal - Project HOPE's bimonthly policy journal and major publication outlet for both public- and private-sector policymakers, is on the leading edge of health policy issues informing and influencing health policy discussions at key junctures.

Capacity Building
Project HOPE's capacity building objective emphasizes its involvement with institutional infrastructure and management to sustaining a health care system and maintaining ongoing impact in all areas within a region. HOPE works with government, public and private sector entities to address and improve health care agencies, infrastructure, and staff, through support of both the community and workforce populations.
