Engaging Youth in the Fight Against Trafficking

In the summer of 2006, Irina Babichyuk and Yana Sobchyuk, trainers from the Amursk Linguistic School in Russia, organized and conducted a campaign entitled One Day Against Human Trafficking for children and youth in several Amursk summer camps. The goal of the campaign, held as part of the Path to Success! program supported by the US Agency for International Development and implemented by Winrock International, was to raise young people’s awareness of human trafficking problems. Volunteers from previous Path to Success! trainings provided considerable assistance to the trainers in planning and conducting the campaign. More than 300 children and youth took part in mini-seminars and art contests. They participated in interactive exercises and watched the film The Story of One Who Returned, a short film about a girl from the Russian Far East who becomes a victim of trafficking. They also received pins and bandanas with the slogan “Stop Human Trafficking” as prizes for participating.

After watching The Story of One Who Returned, the children discussed the methods traffickers use in Russia and acknowledged that any person, regardless of gender, age or social status, could become a victim of trafficking. They then talked about ways to protect themselves, their relatives and friends. The trainers from Amursk Linguistic School declared the program a success and said they were sure that when the school year started in September, the youth and children who participated in the campaign would be eager to share their new knowledge with their classmates.
