InterAction members make $1 billion hunger pledge

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and InterAction announced Thursday that InterAction members will spend more than $1 billion in private funds over the next three years to combat global hunger.

Speaking at an event on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Clinton named the five InterAction members who intend to invest more than $900 million of the pledge and said she was "grateful to InterAction and its members for their outstanding support and generosity."

Clinton also noted InterAction's commitment to provide annual reports at the UN General Assembly on its commitments and disbursements worldwide.

"And just as these organizations hold governments accountable, they have agreed to be held accountable themselves," said Clinton, who later joined Malawi President Joyce Banda for a discussion on the importance of civil society.
