Calling NGOs: Connect with Volunteers in Global Giveback 2013
International nonprofit organizations may already leverage volunteers to deliver key programs and services that meet their mission. But has their training or learning department considered working with volunteers to create courses, adapt existing content to new formats or help translate content to other languages?
Learning professionals have already volunteered and created more than 100 eLearning courses such as these, and are signed up to volunteer with international nonprofit organizations to create more. Global Giveback 2013 is the opportunity for NGOs to connect with these professionals, who are eager to partner on making the world a better place.
In the first four Global Giveback events, volunteer instructional designers and eLearning developers created over 100 eLearning courses for LINGOs (Learning in NGOs) and its 75-plus international NGO member agencies. Last year, LINGOs worked with over 60 volunteers to create courses that are available to the global staff of LINGOs member agencies, and also available free to anyone working to improve people’s lives in the developing world through Last Mile Learning.
This fifth Global Giveback, organized by LINGOs and the eLearning Guild, is the first time that the opportunity to participate is open to all nonprofits working in the international development sector. We want you to get involved.
How Can My Organization Participate in Global Giveback 2013?
To get started, identify the material you want to adapt into a new format of learning and the staff member who will lead the project. Join the Global Giveback Group on Linked in, and post your request for a volunteer. In your post, include your agency name and the project details. Describe what the volunteer will develop, for what audience, with whom the volunteer will work, and the resources they will have to work with. Include a project time line, start date, end date and estimated hours to complete the project.
Respond to volunteers who indicate interest. Interview those whose skills match your needs, and keep others apprised of your plans so they can work with another project if your needs and timing don’t match their skills and time-frame.
Global Giveback organizers do not review or manage relationships between agencies and volunteers. Each party should research each other and interact in professionally, clearly defining success for the interaction before agreeing to collaborate.
Optional Global Giveback 2013 Competition
An optional part of the Global Giveback is a competition among eLearning courses. Participation is not required, but may be motivating to some volunteers.
Not-for-profit development agencies have the option to enter eLearning courses developed for them by volunteer in the 2012 eLearning Global Giveback Competition.
Judges will evaluate courses agencies submit in one of two categories, based on whether they were developed by individual developers or corporate teams, on ten criteria.
For more information on the competition, please visit the Global Giveback site.
Recognition & awards will be announced at the eLearning Guild’s Learning Solutions 2014 conference in Orlando, FL.
