Earthquake in Peru: InterAction Members Respond to the Earthquake in Peru

Earthquake in Peru
An 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck 25 miles west-northwest of Chincha Alta, Peru, and 90 miles south-southeast of Lima the evening of Wednesday, August 15. The death toll from the Wednesday (August 15) earthquake in Peru has now surpassed 500, and as many as 17,000 are reportedly displaced, authorities said. Some 1,000 were injured. The cities of Ica and Pisco have been hardest-hit by the quake. The severely injured are being evacuated to the capital, Lima. The Government of Peru has requested relief items in shelter, tools and medicines.

InterAction member organizations are responding to this crisis through a variety of ways, including financial contributions to local partners, food and medicine distribution, the provision of clean water and sanitation services, and supplying shelter materials.

While InterAction does not accept donations, the InterAction members listed here are accepting contributions for assistance they or their affiliates are providing to those affected by the earhtquake in Peru.

InterAction has also developed guidelines on the most appropriate ways to help those affected by overseas disasters.

InterAction is a coalition of more than 160 US-based private relief, international development and refugee assistance organizations. InterAction members have agreed to abide by a set of standards to ensure accountability to donors, professional competence and quality of service.

(August 16) The Adventist Development and Relief Agency is on the ground in Peru assessing survivors' needs, and has initiated an immediate response to meet the most urgent needs of survivors in the earthquake-hit Ica province. Items being distributed include emergency medical care, water, food, tents, and blankets. ADRA will continue to assess the situation and meet the changing needs of survivors in the aftermath of the earthquake. Updates will be released as response efforts expand in the coming days and weeks.

(August 16) The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee announced that it has opened an emergency mailbox to collect funds for relief efforts following Wednesday's earthquake in Southern Peru. Working with international and local partner organizations, AJJDC will identify both immediate and longer-term needs to help the earthquake victims.

(August 17) AJWS is responding to the Peruvian earthquake by making rapid relief grants to our two project partners located in the region where the epicenter of the earthquake hit: LUNDU Centro de Estudios y Promoción Afroperuanos and Centro para el Desarrollo Urbano y Rural. In addition to our emergency grantmaking, AJWS is working with GROOTS International's disaster response team, which is coordinating with local community leaders in the disaster recovery effort.

(August 17) AmeriCares is a non-profit disaster relief and humanitarian aid organization that provides immediate response to emergency medical needs, as well as supports long-term humanitarian assistance programs around the world. (August 17) Three CARE teams have been dispatched to earthquake affected areas in Peru to assess the damage and immediate needs of survivors. CARE staff has already distributed emergency supplies -- clean water, tools, medicine and blankets already on hand -- to some 200 affected families in Huancavelica, the poorest department in Peru. The poverty-fighting organization expects to mount a full-scale response as more information is reported by its assessment teams.

(August 17) CRS field staff are working around the clock in Peru to identify critical needs and coordinate the delivery of life-saving supplies in the areas most affected by the earthquake. In conjunction with local partner Caritas Peru, CRS' immediate response is focusing on basic needs for thousands who have lost their homes - food, water, shelter, blankets, personal hygiene and cooking kits. CRS is planning a longer-term response in hard-hit areas focusing on permanent shelter, continued access to clean water, infrastructure improvements and the recovery and rehabilitation of livelihoods.

(August 17) After assessing the health care needs of the population in the earthquake affected areas, International Medical Corps is planning to provide assistance through mobile clinics. (August 17) Mercy Corps is partnering with Partners of the Americas to quickly address basic needs of affected communities following the devastating earthquake in Peru. Emergency response operations will likely include distribution of food, water, first aid kits, blankets and other supplies.

(August 17) Relief International Rapid Emergency Deployment (RED) teams are deploying to Lima, Peru to provide emergency relief assistance following the 8.0 magnitude earthquake on August 15, 2007. RI's RED team includes medical professionals who will provide emergency healthcare to earthquake disaster victims, particularly focusing on hard-to-access, rural communities often overlooked in aid efforts. The RED team will conduct ongoing assessments to determine the need for additional RI assistance including provision of adequate shelter and access to clean water.

(August 16) Save the Children is rapidly responding to the developing humanitarian crisis brought on by a large earthquake that struck off the southern coast of Peru on August 15. The agency, which has programs in the country, has a team in the area conducting rapid assessments of the needs of children and their families. The agency and its partners will provide lifesaving relief -- including food, clean water and shelter. Save the Children also will work to ensure that children's education is not interrupted.

(August 16) World Vision staff members are responding to provide 2,000 family survival kits for those most affected by this disaster. So far, we have dispatched 200 blankets, 500 pieces of warm clothing, 10 stoves, and medicines to survivors in affected areas.
