Sue oversees the communications team and develops an overall communications and PR plan for InterAction. She works closely with member organizations to help craft common strategies and messaging for the NGO community. She is also responsible for InterAction's web site and publications which focus on humanitarian and development issues. Prior to joining InterAction, Sue was a correspondent for the international news agency Reuters for two decades, with assignments in Africa, London, Brussels and Washington. She covered the State Department for Reuters, traveling to more than 50 countries with three secretaries of state and also coordinated the news agency’s Afghanistan and Pakistan coverage out of Washington. She started her career with The Star newspaper in Johannesburg and worked for Agence France-Presse as their southern Africa correspondent. She also did a stint for the BBC’s Africa Service in London. Sue has a Bachelor of Journalism and Media Studies from Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa.

 

 

 

Messaging for the right donation

Funding appeals during an emergency require nuanced messaging, a challenge which was tackled in a workshop on the final day of Forum 2012.

The Ad Council’s Tony Foleno and Jamie Corder of the Boulder-based research company Egg Strategy, presented results from several months of research into the best messaging tactics in an emergency.

Changing aid landscape and shrinking budgets

With shrinking foreign assistance budgets and a changing aid landscape, there needs to be a more focused, efficient approach to development, said several speakers at the opening plenary session at InterAction’s annual Forum in Crystal City, Virginia on Monday.

“Assistance budgets are tighter and our funders are demanding greater effectiveness, accountability transparency,” said USAID Deputy Administrator Don Steinberg in the opening plenary session which looked at the role of development in U.S. global engagement.

Aid effectiveness in the spotlight in Busan

Civil society groups, including InterAction, are attending a high-level meeting in South Korea this week to review progress in making aid more effective. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is among hundreds of ministers gathered for the meetings in the South Korean port city of Busan from Nov. 29-Dec. 1.

About 2,000 delegates are at the meeting, which is expected to produce an Outcome Document aimed at improving global efforts to make aid more effective in reducing poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

MEMBER NEWS-Trickle Up co-founder Mildred Robbins Leet dies

Mildred Robbins Leet, the co-founder of poverty alleviation organization Trickle Up, died today. She was 88. Aside from a long list of honors in the humanitarian world, Leet carved a place in America’s history and stood on the speaker’s platform for Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. She was also chosen along with Mother Teresa and Kenyan activist Wangari Maathai to receive the Women of the World Award from Princess Diana in 1989.

Whether in Haiti or Hoboken, New Jersey, the raging floodwaters from Hurricane Sandy had the same miserable impact for millions of people. While natural disasters don’t distinguish between rich or poor, most of the media coverage from Sandy has focused on the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.

Can The G20 Credibility Gap Be Closed?

MEXICO CITY - Whether the G20 is a credible or even legitimate body has been a vibrant topic of conversation among civil society groups that have been meeting in Mexico City this week to discuss strategy for both the G8 and G20 summits this year.

Mexico’s foreign minister, when asked about the legitimacy of the G20, conceded she had her own concerns about its track record on following through on promises.

What Will History Say About The G20 In Cannes?

CANNES, France – Giant billboards pasted all over Cannes this week declare "history is being written" at G20 meetings held here on Thursday and Friday. Walking along the Boulevard de la Croisette to the impressive Palais des Festivals complex where the summit is being held, I wondered (cynically I admit) who history will say benefit most from these meetings on the Riviera Coast. Will it be the clientele and owners of the high-end boutiques that line the star-studded boulevard – Gucci, Chanel or Dior?

DEAUVILLE, France - When is something smoke and mirrors and when should a promise be believed? This was a frequent question during the G8 summit in Deauville last week as world leaders dedicated billions to help "Arab Spring" countries Egypt and Tunisia and promised full transparency in the delivery of previously announced development assistance which never came through.

InterAction member ONE has just released its annual DATA report, a scorecard on whether Group of Eight (G8) nations and the European Union are meeting commitments they made to sub-Saharan Africa back in 2005. The release of ONE’s report is timely, as it comes the week before G8 leaders meet in Deauville, a picturesque seaside town in northern France.
