Christian Fuchs is the Communications Director of Jesuit Refugee Service/USA. Christian writes stories and produces photographs and multimedia for JRS/USA and other JRS Regions, and maintains the JRS/USA website and social media sites. It's not all online, though, as print products are designed and edited by Christian as well.

Christian joined Jesuit Refugee Service/USA in Oct. 2008 after working as Director of Multimedia at The Washington Times. In 2008, Christian was part of a team at the paper that was awarded one of journalism's most most prestigious awards — the Society of Professional Journalists' Public Service Award — for its investigative series "Disposable Heroes." The series disclosed the unethical treatment of war veterans during a VA medical experiment. Christian previously held positions as photo editor and staff photographer at newspapers in D.C., Virginia, Texas and Florida.

After a high school education at Tampa Jesuit High School, Christian studied at the University of South Florida and then joined the U.S. Navy as a Journalist. Trained in print and broadcast journalism, Christian worked as a television producer, director and videographer on the islands of Crete and Diego Garcia, where he was named News Director. His next assignment took him to Tokyo, where he worked as a copy editor and section editor at Stars & Stripes for several months, before becoming a staff photographer at the newspaper and being recognized with several awards for his work.

Christian has volunteed as an instructor during workshops teaching photography and multimedia storytelling at Syracuse University and Southern Illinois University; he also serves on the Board of the Multimedia Contest Committee of the White House News Photographers Association.

Refugees told JRS last month that the militants force rural Somalis to make a harsh choice: give up a son to join the fighters, or pay the militants off with camels or cash.
